Application of Possible Selves Using Digital Media in Art Therapy
Park So-Jung

Abstract
Possible selves represent one¡¯s ideas of hopes, fears, and goals for the future, and provide a conceptual link between cognition and motivation. The theory of possible selves is drawing attention in various fields in academia and research where behavioral changes are necessary and required. The concept of possible selves has also been utilized in art therapy, often through the use of hypothetical themed directives using traditional drawing materials. However, studies on the direct relations between the two theoretical frameworks have been limited. Recently, possible selves have been linked to the virtual and augmented reality programs developed in psychiatry, which suggest the possibility of various applications of possible selves using digital media in art therapy. This qualitative case study was to reveal the experiences of an individual with a tendency to be addicted to alcohol, and who participated in art therapy visualizing possible selves through the use of digital media. The results showed that the research participant was able to clarify his perception of the future, transformed abstract fantasy into personal hopes, embodied possible selves in a virtual reality, and found the meaning of life as a subjective being. This confirmed the therapeutic significance of the application of possible selves through digital media in art therapy.
